As our nation looks to plants to satisfy its growing energy demands, University of Georgia scholars are searching for answers to both long-term and near-term questions associated with bioenergy production. UGA’s Bioenergy Systems Research Institute unites the university’s legacies in agriculture, forestry, environmental science, engineering and economics with its strengths in carbohydrate science, genetics and microbiology to provide the scientific and practical foundation to support an economic and sustainable bioenergy future. Goal: Facilitate collaborations among a broad spectrum of bioenergy research efforts by providing UGA faculty and other interested stakeholders with a venue for discussing their research, outreach and instructional interests.

9:00 – 10:00 Keynote Address (Master’s Hall), Virginia H. Dale, Director, Center for BioEnergy Sustainability, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Sustainable Bioenergy Challenges and Perspectives

Dr. Virginia H. Dale is a Corporate Fellow in the Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and was selected as the 2006 Distinguished Scientist for the Laboratory. She is Director of ORNL’s Center for BioEnergy Sustainability (http://www.ornl.gov/sci/ees/cbes/).  She obtained her M.S. in mathematics from the University of Tennessee and her Ph.D. in mathematical ecology from the University of Washington. Her primary research interests are environmental decision making, forest succession, land-use change, landscape ecology, ecological modeling, and sustainability of bioenergy systems. Virginia has authored 10 books and more than 220 published articles. She has served on national scientific advisory boards for five federal agencies (the Environmental Protection Agency, US Departments of Agriculture, Defense, Energy, and Interior). She recently served on the committee of the US National Research Council on Renewable Fuel Standard: Potential Economic and Environmental Effects of U.S. Biofuel Policy. Virginia is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Environmental Management and serves on the editorial board of several journals.
